Why we opened the ceiling

The ceiling over the kitchen and living area was wet, and it was a popcorn ceiling, which hides a lot. Painting over a wet ceiling does not dry it. We opened it to the joists so we could see the cavity and put air in it.

The thermal camera showed where moisture was still sitting on the assemblies that were left. That tells us where to point the air. We set air movers on the kitchen island aimed up at the opening and out into the rooms below, so the whole path dried together instead of just the spot with the stain.
