What you see on arrival

From the ground: granules, lifted tabs, a gutter full of roof grit. That is a roof note, not proof of a storm ID. Do not invent hail macros. Photograph what you can see.
What is wet or damaged that you cannot see
Wet insulation. Wet decking. The top plate. The next bay. Vinyl that still reads wet. Thermal is a hint. Meters are the log. ANSI/IICRC S500. Structural drying. Thermal. Storm water through the envelope is still a water loss even when the story starts on the roof.
In the attic: wet batts, dripping decking, a can light full of water. That is the path into the room. The stain on the paint is the last place the water advertised.
What comes out vs what stays
Saturated blown insulation comes out. Paper-faced drywall that will not dry comes out on a line. The roof covering is a separate call from the room — do not let a 'paint the ceiling' sheet close the attic. Occupied millwork stays if the map says it will dry. Salvage vs tear-out.
Insulation that will not dry comes out. The ceiling plane may stay if the meter agrees. Do not pull a whole floor of rock because one ring showed.
What the log contains

When the family stays vs leaves
If the ceiling is coming down over a crib, they leave that room. If the envelope is open, board it. ALE is the carrier.
Sleep somewhere else if the ceiling is heavy. Board the opening if the next storm is on the radar. ALE is the carrier.
What the first estimate usually misses

Paint-only sheets miss the attic. Roof-only sheets miss the room. Put both in front of whoever is writing the number. You choose the contractor.
